Overview
The ancient town of Hoi An, 30 km south of Danang, lies on the banks of the Thu Bon River. Occupied by early western traders, Hoi An was one of the major trading centers of Southeast Asia in the 16th century. Hoi An has a distinct Chinese atmosphere with low, tile-roofed houses and narrow streets; the original structure of some of these streets still remains almost intact. All the houses were made of rare wood, decorated with lacquered boards and panels engraved with Chinese characters. Pillars were also carved with ornamental designs. Tourists can visit the relics of the Sa Huynh and Cham cultures. They can also enjoy the beautiful scenery of the romantic Hoi An River, Cua Dai Beach, and Cham Island. Over the last few years, Hoi An has become a very popular tourist destination in Vietnam.

Transportation
By Plane Flying into Da Nang from Ho Chi Minh (Saigon) Nha Trang and Hanoi is available daily and the fares are quite reasonable. Then transfer needs to be organized to Hoi An, the best way is to negociate a rate with a taxi ($12-$15US), or take public bus for 20,000VND. By Train Those travelling by train will arrive at the Danang Train Station at the corner of Hai Phong and Hoang Hoa Tham streets. Then it's a quick taxi or bus ride to Hoi An. The fare is about US$5 less than flying. (The exception is the 4-hour Danang-Hue express, which is the best way to get to Hue.) By Bus Public buses from all the bigger Cities connect to the main Bus station. Although Open-Tour Buses take you directly to the hostel area, they charge more and sort of keep you from contact with locals. From Nha Trang calculate 10 to 12 hours to arrive in Hoi An. Other Means Taxis, cyclos, and motorbikes. Taxi drivers are usually reasonably honest, but make sure they turn the meter on. With cyclos and bikes, you need to know where you are going and how much it should cost, or you will be overcharged. By bike Hire a bike and join the locals as they swarm across the bridges and along the main roads at a leisurely pace.
